What would you suggest for general care in the winter?
How much should I fertilize my houseplants and what would you suggest for general care in the winter?
For my own houseplants, I use a fraction of the fertilizer rates suggested on the label for winter and then start increasing it in the early spring when the days begin getting longer. I also use leftover tea mixed in with the water on a regular basis and seem to have good results with what I am doing. Houseplants always stop growing as vigorously with the low light and humidity levels of winter. Overfertilizing during this time will only stress the plant. If you would like more information on houseplants, see Oregon State’s nice Web site: eesc.orst.edu/agcomwebfile/garden/houseplant. Having a reference book about houseplant care is handy. Since you tend to them more frequently than outdoor plants, I think that questions crop up a little more often.
