How do I take care of a poinsettia after the holidays? Will it bloom again next winter?
The “bloom” on your poinsettia consists of modified leaves called “bracts” that redden. The tiny yellow parts in the middle of the bracts are the actual blooms. Nonetheless, poinsettias are wonderful plants to brighten winter days and can be kept going well into the late winter. It, of course, is possible to work with your poinsettia to encourage “bloom” again next winter. However, remember that these plants have come to us from ideal nursery growing conditions when we receive them. These conditions are rather difficult to replicate at home, but not impossible, and the experience would be, at worst, interesting to try! The following is an article that will give you specific details about growing poinsettias and the conditions they will require for rebloom as well as taking care of other holiday plants written by Robert Nuss, retired professor of ornamental horticulture at Penn State: http://www.penpages.psu.edu/penpages_reference/29401/2940178.html
